UAE Visa Guide

UAE WORK GUIDE · Reviewed 15 October 2026

Understand work permission before you start a job in the UAE.

Residence and work permission are different

A residence status allows you to live in the country under its conditions. Employment requires the appropriate work permission. A visit or tourist visa does not authorise work. Even self-sponsored residents should check the work permit needed for their role.

The employer-sponsored process

  1. Verify the employer and written offer.
  2. Confirm whether mainland or free-zone authorities handle your employment.
  3. Ask the employer to arrange the appropriate work permit and confirm your authorised start date.
  4. Complete the applicable entry or status-adjustment, identity and residence requirements.
  5. Keep copies of your contract and permit records.

Your route depends on your current status and employment regime. Follow the official employment process and work permit guidance.

Prepare your documents

Request the current checklist from the verified employer or authority. Passport, photograph, signed offer and role-dependent qualifications may be needed. Attestation and other requirements vary. Share sensitive documents only through verified channels.

Changing or leaving employment

Coordinate contractual notice, work-permit cancellation or transfer, and residence status separately. Do not assume every residence category has the same grace period. Confirm your own deadlines with the relevant authority before travel or a job move.

Avoid fraud

Do not rely on promises of guaranteed approval. Verify the job offer and any payment request through official channels. See the official fraud-prevention guide.

Fees, eligibility and processing times depend on the route. This is general information, not individual immigration advice.
